Mr & Mrs. Not Married

We are all familiar with relationships, especially relationships of love. We could probably each tell that cute love story of our grandparents, how they meet and their secret dates. Or the story of our best friends or other people who are close to us.

However, this seems to not be as popular with the new generation of both young adults and adults. We tend not to marry at a young age like our grandparents or even parents. This new generation probably will not get married or even date, having those love relationships that last a lifetime. We are more likely to tell our grandkids, if we have them about our Netflix and Chill form of dating.

According to Meg Murphy, a writer at Bentley University, says that “traditional marriage has been on a downward trajectory for generations, but with this group [millennials] it appears to be in free fall. According to a report released last month by the Pew Research Center, 25 percent of millennials are likely to never be married.”. It is not that millennials are no longer in relationships however, instead young couples live together and put off getting married until later or not at all.

Gabriela Barkho from the Washington Post, finds that “Marriage is indeed a financial investment, which explains why people in their 20s aren’t ready to take the plunge, considering the mounting debts and scarce job prospects they face today. ‘We both have student debt, so it’s ridiculous,’ Schaefer said. ‘And it’s a domino effect. Because then what’s the next step? Kids? A house? We can’t afford that now.” Most young adults, especially recent college grads are faced with the challenges of paying off their four year degree. Marriage is not an option as the money the earn is put toward things such as paying students loans, bills, food, and other necessities.

According to a U.S cenus figure in 2011, 20 percent of Americans between that ages of 18 and 29 are married which is significant drop compared to 1960 when 59 percent of the same age group were married. The median age for a first time bride is now 26 and a groom 28.

For Millennials pay, school, work all contribute to the growing number of not getting married. Most millennials that are not married are not single but can not afford the expenses involved with marriage. In today’s changing society and high cost of living marriage is certainly not on the to do list.
